Developer: Llama Lamp

Android Park: Llama Lamp is two developer team from Hilo, Hawaii. They both grew up in Hilo, Hawaii and are both 18 years old.  The two boys have been making video games together since freshman year in high school, and they are both freshman in college now. Ninja’s Ascent is the first title released by Llama Lamp.  Let’s get to know this young team & their game.

Android Park: Would you please introduce yourself to us and our readers?

Llama Lamp: Hello everyone, we like to call ourselves Llama Lamp Games. The name is completely meaningless, we just happened to be staring at a lava lamp and everyone likes llamas. The team consists of myself and my roommate. We have been making video games together since our freshman year in high school, and we’re freshman in college now. We both grew up in Hilo, Hawaii and are both 18 years old. We both attend college and have part-time jobs, so we develop games entirely in our free time.

Theodore DeRego: Programmer. I enjoy programming, studying artificial intelligence, running, and competing in game dev jams.

Nainoa Kalaukoa: Artist. Enjoys drawing, going to garage sales, swimming, and competing in game dev jams.

Android Park: How do you start your career in designing or developing mobile game? Is there any interesting story which happened at the beginning of your gaming career

Llama Lamp: I started programming when I was 10 years old, and I made my first game for the PSP when I was 12. I am completely self-taught, so I know that Google can teach anyone to become a game developer. Nainoa and I met our freshman year in high school, became very close friends, and have been making video games together ever since.

Android Park: How long have you been engaged in gaming industry? Are you enjoying in working in this industry? What makes you most excited in designing or developing a mobile game?

Llama Lamp: I’ve been programming for 8 years now, and I’ve been making games for six. Nainoa and I have been making games together for a little over 4 years now. We both enjoy developing games very much, and this is our first Android game. Working on this game has been a blast from start to finish, and I encourage anyone who wants to get into game development to just Google a few tutorials! We enjoy making games so much because building a game is like building your own universe where you’re in charge. You can let your imagination come to life and show it off!

Android Park: Since Android and IOS are the two major mobile platforms that people use now, how do you think about the development future for these two platforms?

Llama Lamp: They are both great platforms, each having very good development tools. I think the app industry is going to get even bigger than it already is. So if you want to get a great app out there, better sooner than later! There’s plenty of great tutorials out there to get you started, so there’s absolutely no excuses!

Android Park: Tell us the story about this Android game.  What inspired you to make such an Android game ?

Llama Lamp: This is our first mobile release. In the game, you play as a ninja trying to get as high as possible. That’s it. You can jump onto and off of walls and falling debris in order to ascend to new heights! You have to be careful to dodge fireballs and grab power ups, too, though! The gameplay is inspired from the common “get as far as you can” concept. We find those games addicting and perfect for short waits when you need something to do. Also, jumping up on falling debris is just plain badass.

Android Park: Do you have something special to say to our readers and your future fans ?

Llama Lamp: We’d just like to thank everyone who tries the game out or has supported us along the way. We appreciate any feedback and look forward to making many fun games!

Android Park: Please supplement anything special or interesting you want us to add in this interview.

Llama Lamp: If you also enjoy making games, check out the Ludum Dare! You can find us competing in the Jam every time it is hosted. It is hosted approximately every 4 months.
