Android Park: Sedai Labs is an independent studio founded by Jason Yokoyama.  Upset the Fruit Basket is the first game which Sedai Labs launched.  Jason got inspiration from the game, Tetris Attack for SNES, which he played when he was younger.   Let’s listen to the interesting stories behind the game.

Android Park: Would you please introduce yourself to us and our readers?

Sedai Labs: Hello everyone,  my name is Jason Yokoyama and I have developed this game under Sedai Labs. Upset the Fruit Basket is my first foray into game development. The coding for the game was done by me and the artwork for the game was done by my talented friend Megan Saiki. I have a full-time day job, a wife, and an 8 month old daughter, so developing this game had to be done when I had downtime. Needless to say, life is busy these days.

Android Park: How do you start your career in designing or developing mobile games? Is there an interesting story that happened at the beginning of your gaming career?

Sedai Labs: This is my first game! I graduated with a computer science degree, but never had any game development background. I have coded a lot of other things before such as websites (php, asp), and other miscellaneous programs (c#), but this is the first time I have ever developed a game.

Android Park: How long have you been engaged in the gaming industry? Are you enjoying working in this industry? What makes you most excited about designing or developing a mobile game?

Sedai Labs: So far, this has been a great new experience. Seeing everything that is involved from game development to promoting your project, there is a lot that goes on to make sure the game you spent so much time creating actually gets seen by other people. What gets me most excited is seeing people genuinely enjoy using the game you developed.

Android Park: Since Android and IOS are the two major mobile platforms that people use now, how do you think about the development future for these two platforms?

Sedai Labs: It’s pretty split. I don’t think that will change much, especially in the near future. It’s like the old days with Nintendo and Sega. You had two camps, and I see this continuing in a similar fashion.

Android Park: Tell us the story about this Android game.  What inspired you to make such an Android game ?

Sedai Labs: I kept looking around the Google Play Store for a game that resembled a game I used to play when I was younger- Tetris Attack for SNES. I loved that game and wanted to play a touchscreen enabled version of that on my phone. Unfortunately, the ones I did find always had flaws in them. Some were overly simplistic, some had slightly different mechanics, and some did not behave in a way that properly mimicked the original. For example, when a piece is falling, you should have time to slip something under it. It may seem like a small thing, but what made the original so great were all the little nuances you could not find in the existing ports in the Play Store. I wanted to provide a game that retained the same feel- small nuances an all, while adding a few new wrinkles.

Android Park: Do you have something special to say to our readers and your future fans ?

Sedai Labs: I hope you enjoy the game! The single player mode is an addicting time waster, but the 2 player mode is a LOT of fun, especially when played on a tablet. Hopefully there are much greater things in store for the future.

Android Park: Anything to supplement ?

Sedai Labs: Thanks for your time!
