Android Park: We are very excited to launch our Developer Interview section in our Android Park Magazine. Today we’ll interview our first developer guest SPIN FALL, an independent and talented game studio, who just released their first Android game Frog on Ice. Let’s listen to their stories behind the game and get to know more about their work, life, and inspirations.

Android Park: Would you please introduce yourself to us and our readers?

SPIN FALL: Hello everybody, my name is Franklin Lyons, and I am an independent game designer, developer, and technical artist. My now two-person mobile development company, Spin Fall, consists of myself and my wife, Stephanie. I’ve been designing and developing games for a while now, but I’ve never had the time to market them. Stephanie used to work as a high school English teacher, but this year she jumped on board as our new marketing and PR person. So, while I do all of the technical and artistic stuff, she’s now working on the marketing end of things. We make a great team!

Android Park: How do you start your career in designing or developing mobile games? Is there an interesting story that happened at the beginning of your gaming career?

SPIN FALL: As a toddler, I drew everywhere, including the kitchen walls. By the time I was a teenager, I had countless notebooks full of sketches and drawings. By the time I got to college, I saw myself someday becoming a “starving artist,” concentrating most of my time in painting, drawing, and design classes, learning everything I could about fine art. I didn’t want to use a computer, and wasn’t at all interested in learning programming – I told myself I would never be one of those “geeks.”

Eventually, I took a course that integrated art with technology, creating Flash animations. Surprisingly, I found myself really enjoying the process, and discovered I was actually pretty good at it. I’d sit for hours, tweaking tweens and animations, and began looking for something more interactive. It started simply with a button to press which made a character move. But that built up, and I eventually found myself programming full-fledged Flash animations and building interactive websites. Creating games became a natural part of my progression, having the design and programming background it takes to make a game from start to finish. I suppose becoming a geek was my destiny!

Android Park: How long have you been engaged in the gaming industry? Are you enjoying working in this industry? What makes you most excited about designing or developing a mobile game?

SPIN FALL: I’ve been engaged professionally in the gaming industry for a little over two years now, and I love it. I got started developing games for the iPhone using the Cocos 2D gaming engine, and eventually moved on to Unity. The technology is what I’m really excited about, because with Unity I can use all the skills I developed in my early days of animation, and I can create concepts and prototypes really quickly. The creation process is in itself is rewarding, but at the end of the day what I find the most rewarding about game development is being able to release a product and share it with the world.
